My own puppets: Hand puppets

Muppet rip-offs

This is what I did in high school-- puppets in a style I borrowed shamelessly from the Muppets. They are made of foam rubber and false furs.

I made up my own very Muppet-like skits and produced them on public-access cable.

My brother Levni (or as someone at the Boston Globe called him, "'Lev', the artist formerly known as Levni Yilmaz") also used these puppets in a really hilarious video called "Liberty Beast"-- it's basically a Sesame Street episode for adults.

The puppets were also used in a video called "Child's Play" that Lev and I did together in late 1994. It was a satire of kids' educational safety films. Basically, the puppets were confronting what kinds of things kids really have to deal with today. There was a section on avoiding drug pushers at the playground, for instance, and another on what to do if your best friend owns a gun. It culminated in a great song Lev wrote, which was all about instructing kids how to be safe and maybe even "Live to be Nine." We made the video as part of an installation about kids and media violence. I also made some quick papier mache sculptures for ambience in the room. The exhibition was organized by the multitalented Amatul Hannan.

The film alone was also shown later (early 1995) at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, and I believe a few other places too.
